There’s a saying about American presidents that after their inaugurations they cannot get trusted advisors. The point is that once a person becomes president of the United States, it’s too late to figure out whose advice he can trust. He needs to form those relationships long before he’s seated in the Oval Office.

There’s a principle here for us as well, and that’s to pick our advisors before they are needed. What if you unexpectedly faced one of the most difficult and important decisions of your life this week? Who would you call for counsel? Who would you ask to pray for you? Do you know someone who would be willing to speak to God on your behalf and speak to you on God’s behalf? We all need wise counsel when difficult times come, and the best time to build those relationships is before the crisis comes.
