It’s Him or Me

Robert Wuthnow, a professor of social science at Princeton University, wrote a book called God and Mammon in America. In his research, he concluded that while there are many Americans who claim to be very devout in their commitment to God, in reality, their material possessions and money are more important. His title comes from the Sermon on the Mount when Jesus said, “You cannot serve God and Money.”

It’s like the wife who carried on a secret affair for years. When her husband finally found out, she explained, “I want to keep our marriage together, but I can’t stop seeing my lover because I love you both.” The husband insisted, “You can’t have it both ways. It’s me or him.”

And that’s exactly what Jesus was saying. You can’t make God and material possessions equal in your life?you have to chose which comes first.
