How to Get Close to God

Do you ever long to be close to God but don’t know how to do it? The Bible gives this advice: “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts.”

In Bible times, hand washing was not primarily for sanitary purposes. They had no idea that clean hands reduced infections. For them, it was a ceremonial practice that symbolized asking God for forgiveness of sins.

Sin is rebellion against God. If we want to come near to God, we must take sin seriously. We need to ask God for forgiveness for what we’ve done and ask him to purify us and make us as if we’d never sinned. Just as newly fallen snow makes a dirty landscape look fresh and pure, God’s forgiveness miraculously purifies our hearts.
