Looking Back at My 20s: What Have I Done?
April 12, 2010

As I talked with a customer who came through my check-out lane, we got to talking about the “old days”, long before I was born, and how I would have liked to have been able to experience a bit of it in reality rather than through cinema portrayals. This prompted my customer to remember to some 70 years ago and she mentioned with some whimsy, “My husband and I lived during the Depression and we didn’t even know we were depressed!” I laughed so hard at that, knowing there was a tremendous amount of wisdom in her words.

I’m no economic wizard, but it would seem that we’re definitely in a sort of depression today. Jobs are hard to come by and we have seen banks falter and the national debt keeps getting worse, it seems. So when I recently got hired on at a company that’s going to pay me $10.25/hour starting out (plus commission), I felt like I struck oil! (Not to mention it’s now the 2nd-highest-paying job I have ever had.)

However, back in the Depression days, unemployment was up to 25% (up to 33% in other countries) as farming, mining, logging and other industrial jobs took heavy casualties (see Wikipedia references). In fact, since farming was an extremely important industry way back in the early 1900s, the 60% price drop hurt the nation with particular severity. Banks failed and a record number of loans defaulted. Truly, the Depression ravaged the lives of people across the world.

Yet, one woman who lived through it all quipped how they hardly paid it any attention. I never got a chance to really inquire about how they endured such troublesome times, but, somehow, it seems they found a way to be content with each other and what things they did have to help them through.
