Sexual Abuse in the Church: A Catholic’s Response

Before Christ, After Christ

It’s said in almost any political speech. Many patriotic Americans have a bumper sticker with this three-word message on their car. We can be heard as a nation crying out this simple phrase, all the while, it seems, we’re only concerned about two-thirds of it.

“God bless America.” Guess which third we tend to be less concerned about.

This is a difficult matter to address for me, being both a Christian and an American. As a Christian, I am dedicated to living my life in a way that honors God and strengthens my friendship with Him. But as an American, I am part of a nation that, on the whole (despite the stats that suggest we are about 75% Christian), actually cares little about actually doing what God wants. It truly does not take much to notice that there are things that we do as Americans that clearly contradicts God’s Word (a.k.a. the Bible). Yet, all the while, as (many corrupt) politicians rally for votes and push for support on some bill with hidden agendas and try to gather people together in patriotic fervor, and as citizens we cry for freedom only to cry foul when things that would clearly hurt us are deemed unlawful, we say, “…and God bless America!”

Why?! What have we done as a nation that should earn God’s blessings? Have we met some quota of good deeds as a nation that God should hand us out some kind of freebie? Did we get enough glittery stars for not tripping over too many politically incorrect red tape? Perhaps it’s because we aren’t as bad as the country that’s locked in civil war or that country that regulates people’s lives down the nit-picky details. Maybe it’s because we “improved” people’s lives even though we’ve put a hex on the income after health care expenses. Whatever it is – I’m no politically suave man here – it is no mystery that this nation has more problems going on that most want to admit. And don’t get me wrong – we do have a lot of good things going for us, too. I’m not overlooking that. More Here…
