Last Father’s Day

“Kellus, come on boy! I’m leaving without you in 5 minutes!!”
My Dad was always calm, yet firm with how he exclaimed his warnings. “Yes sir! I’ll be out there in a second, almost ready” I said, knowing my Dad played not when it came to being on time. There was something different today though. As I rushed out of the bathroom, backpack slung over my shoulder, I was prepared to find my Dad outside waiting in the car. He was lingering in the kitchen holding my 2 year old sister, lovingly whispering something to my Mom. Yet, the aura of joy seemed to be mixed with a certain somberness, quite a paradox of an oxymoron. I tried to ignore it as I scooped up a strawberry flavored pastry and took a quick seat next to my 12 year old brother who didn’t have as much on his plate as I did. I mean, how late do 7th graders have to stay up doing homework, right? As my brother got up from the table, Dad gently wrapped a muscular arm around his shoulder and spoke a few words of encouragement to him. “Yes sir, I will”, I heard my brother say before turning and making his way out the door to catch the bus.
