With less than a week to the 14th edition of University Gospel Choir of the Year, the excitement is already building for what promises to be a powerful evening of music, faith and outstanding choral performances. Bringing together some of the best university gospel choirs from across the UK, the event will be hosted by Cassandra Maria, a familiar voice within the UK gospel community. Known for her work in broadcasting and presenting, she will guide the audience through the evening, introducing the choirs, engaging with the judges and helping to keep the atmosphere lively as the competition unfolds.

This year’s judging panel features Anu Omideyi, Russell Scott and Volney Morgan, with Limoblaze joining as a special guest judge, adding an exciting dimension to the evening. With such a respected and diverse panel bringing their experience to the table, the stage is set for a memorable night as each choir gives their very best.

So, let’s meet the judges…

Limoblaze: Limoblaze is a multi-award-winning Afro-gospel artist known for blending Afrobeats, hip-hop and contemporary gospel music. Born Samuel Onwubiko in Nigeria and now based in the UK, he has become one of the leading voices in the global Afro-gospel movement. His breakout single Jireh (My Provider), a collaboration with Lecrae and Happi, introduced his sound to international audiences. He has released acclaimed projects including Blind, Before Now and Afrobeats, Rap & Jesus. In 2022 he signed with Reach Records, later releasing God’s Favourite Baby and Young & Chosen. In 2024 he won Best Gospel Act at the MOBO Awards, further cementing his influence across the UK and global gospel scene.

Anu Omideyi: Anu is an award-winning and experienced choir director, having worked in this capacity for over 30 years. As part of her role as Director of the National Gospel Music Centre based at Liverpool Lighthouse, she currently directs not one but three gospel choirs! She is also the Festival Director for the Liverpool Gospel Music Festival, Co-Chair of the Gospel Music Industry Alliance UK and a Fellow of the Rock School of Learning. 

Russell Scott: Russell Scott is a renowned figure in the music industry, with over 45 years of experience as a Producer, Musical Director, Singer Vocal Coach and Mentor. Throughout his career, Russell has performed at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall and the London Palladium, as well as a host of international venues and arenas. He has contributed to many movies and soundtracks, including the Pirates of the Caribbean and Shrek 2. Russell has produced several shows, including a major UK tour of Godspell in Concert, and is the founder of the World Voices Festival. He also hosts The Choir Director Podcast.

Volney Morgan: Volney Morgan is a multi-award-winning artist and the lead vocalist of the gospel group Volney Morgan & New Ye. The group has been featured in many prestigious events, including the MOBO Awards and BBC Proms, since their debut album “Focus” topped the UK iTunes Christian and Gospel Charts in 2016. His passion for gospel music and innovative approach to performing have made him a prominent figure in the UK gospel scene.
